Government budget allocations for R&D hit record level in Lithuania

New data from OECD shows a sharp increase in government budget allocations for R&D in Lithuania in 2024. The jump breaks well above recent averages and sets a new record high in the long-running series.

Record R&D budget reaches new peak

According to OECD data, government budget allocations for R&D in Lithuania reached USD 734.1 million (PPP, current prices) in 2024. This compares with USD 551.7 million in 2023, marking an increase of USD 182.4 million, or 33.1% in a single year. The latest figure represents a significant increase in public R&D funding.

New high reshapes a long rising trend

Over the period from 2004 to 2024, Lithuania’s government R&D allocations have generally risen, with the 2024 level standing more than double the long-run average of USD 324.8 million and clearly above the more recent average of USD 505 million. This new peak, far above the 2004 minimum of USD 160.2 million, signals that public support for research is now playing a larger financial role than at any point in the past two decades, with implications for universities, public labs and innovation-oriented programmes that depend on these funds.
