Maternal mortality ratio rises sharply in Bahrain

New data from WHO shows a steep increase in the maternal mortality ratio in Bahrain in 2023. The jump interrupts a decades-long decline and lifts the rate to its highest level in more than a decade.

Latest data show a sharp annual jump

According to WHO data updated on 10th April 2025, Bahrain’s maternal mortality ratio reached 17 deaths per 100 000 live births in 2023. This compares with 5 deaths per 100 000 live births in 2022, marking an increase of 12 deaths and a 240% rise in a single year. The move represents a significant increase after previously very low levels.

Long-term decline contrasts with recent setback

Over the longer period from 1985 to 2023, the maternal mortality ratio in Bahrain has generally been falling, with an overall average of 23.4 deaths per 100 000 live births. The new 2023 figure of 17 deaths sits well below the historical peak of 37 deaths recorded in 1985 but above the series low of 5 deaths in 2022, making it the highest level since 2011 while still within the lower half of the long-run range. This reversal from a recent average of 11.2 deaths, following much higher early levels around 36.2, is noteworthy because it breaks the pattern of steady improvement and may signal emerging risks for maternal health outcomes.
