Total fertility rate falls in Czechia

New data from Eurostat shows an 11% decrease in the total fertility rate in Czechia in 2023. The drop breaks a period of relatively stable and higher fertility levels observed in recent years.

Fertility rate drops sharply

According to Eurostat, the total fertility rate in Czechia reached 1.46 children per woman in 2023. This was down from 1.64 in 2022, marking an absolute decline of 0.18 points. The move represents a clear decrease after several years of relatively steady readings.

New level near decade low

Over the longer period since 2012, the total fertility rate in Czechia has generally followed a stable path around an average of 1.6, peaking at 1.83 in 2021 and rarely touching the lower levels seen in 2012. The return to a value close to that earlier low means families are now having fewer children than in most recent years, with potential implications for future school enrolments, workforce size and planning of social services.
