Doctor workforce gains expand care capacity in parts of the world

Doctor workforces grew in Iceland, Ireland and Indonesia, expanding capacity for care. But South Korea's physician count fell 3.5% in 2024, while Indonesia reached 0.64 doctors per 1,000 people in 2025.

  • South Korea: Physician numbers fell 3.5% in 2024, a drop of 4,889 to 132,916, reversing 15 years of workforce growth.
  • Indonesia: Practising doctors rose to 0.64 per 1,000 people in 2025 from 0.56 in 2024, expanding care capacity but leaving fewer than one doctor per 1,000 residents.
  • Ireland: Doctor numbers reached 22,257 in 2025, up 6.2%, outpacing population growth of 1.7%.
  • Iceland: The doctor count rose 6.5% to 1,918 in 2025, faster than population growth of 1.5%.

Together, these countries show gains in medical staffing alongside a workforce decline, rather than a uniform worldwide trend.
