Tourism brings uneven gains for businesses in the euro area

Tourism trends diverged in parts of the euro area in 2025: hotel bed occupancy reached 78% in Cyprus but fell to 42.6% in Lithuania, while Dutch residents spent more on short trips.

  • Cyprus: Hotel bed occupancy rose to 78% in 2025 from 72.4% in 2024. Tourist accommodation registered 19.1 million overnight stays, bringing more business to the sector.
  • Lithuania: Hotel arrivals fell 11.6% to 2.42 million, while overnight stays dropped 7.2%. Bed occupancy declined to 42.6% from 45.3%, leaving more capacity unused.
  • Netherlands: Residents spent €7.61 billion on trips lasting one to three nights, up 41.2%. Trip numbers rose just 1%, so spending grew much faster than travel.

These figures show an uneven tourism picture in the euro area, with stronger hotel demand in Cyprus, weaker demand in Lithuania and greater short-trip spending by Dutch residents.
