Less fossil-fuel reliance reshapes electricity supply in the EU

Electricity mixes shifted away from fossil fuels in parts of the EU in 2025: nuclear supplied 42% in Czechia, while fossil fuels fell to 19.78% in Slovenia.

  • Czechia: Nuclear supplied 42% of electricity in 2025, overtaking coal, gas and oil combined at 40%. Fossil fuels had held the larger share in 2024.
  • Slovenia: Fossil fuels supplied 19.78% of electricity in 2025, down from 23.46% in 2024. Coal's share fell, although gas gained ground.
  • Luxembourg: In a separate development, domestic electricity generation rose 12.3% in July 2026 to 288.11 GWh compared with June.

These national figures show less reliance on fossil fuels in two EU electricity mixes, alongside later growth in Luxembourg's domestic output—not a single EU-wide trend.
