More residents travel in parts of the EU, but gains are uneven

Resident travel grew in several EU countries in 2025: overnight trips rose 13% in Greece, while leisure traveller numbers increased 20% in Denmark. Short breaks and hotel demand showed a more mixed picture.

  • Cyprus: Short-break traveller numbers rose 23.3% to 366,805 in 2025, while spending increased 24.8% to €702.6 million. Hotel nights grew 6.7% to 19.1 million, with bed occupancy reaching 78%.
  • Slovenia: In a separate, later period, hotels registered 1.27 million guest nights in August 2026. Nights across all tourist accommodation rose 5.84% year on year.
  • Denmark: Overnight leisure traveller numbers rose 20% to 3.85 million in 2025. However, trips lasting one to three nights fell 41% to 9.12 million.
  • Greece: Residents took 8.17 million overnight trips in 2025, up 13%. Short breaks grew faster, rising 22.4% to 2.25 million trips.
  • Lithuania: The number of residents aged 15+ taking overnight personal trips rose 5.1% to 1.58 million in 2025. Hotel arrivals fell 11.6% to 2.42 million.

These country figures show growing travel demand in parts of the EU, but uneven results for short breaks and hotels rather than a single EU-wide trend.
