New census estimates lift Albania’s reported median age

Albania’s reported median age reached 45.4 years in 2025, the highest in data beginning in 2014. [The national statistics agency](https://www.instat.gov.al/media/v2jls5y3/population-on-1-january-2025-dt-12062025-anglisht.pdf?utm_source=openai) attributes much of the abrupt change to estimates being rebased after the 2023 census.

Now has more older people for each working age resident

Albania had 33.3 people aged 65 or over per 100 people aged 15 to 64 in 2025, up from 24.4 in 2023. That puts it just below the EU benchmark of 34.5 after years of convergence.

Has fewer children relative to its working age population

Albania’s youth dependency ratio — the number of children below working age relative to the working age population — fell from 27.9% in 2023 to 24.2% in 2025. The 3.7-point drop put the measure at its lowest in Eurostat’s series beginning in 2002.
