Freight and passenger trains logged 21,418 thousand train-kilometres in 2025, up 99.18% from 10,753 thousand in 2024 and the highest reading in Eurostat’s series beginning in 2004. The break is too abrupt to assume that travel or freight demand increased at the same rate.
