The EU generated 181.0 kg of packaging waste per person in 2024. Plastic waste rose in Denmark, Italy and Portugal, where it increased by 19.5%, while France cut its plastic waste.

  • Portugal: Plastic packaging waste rose by 19.5% to 47.3 kg per person in 2024, above the EU average of 35.9 kg.
  • France: Plastic packaging waste fell by 5.4% to 33.51 kg per person, but total packaging waste rose to 173.1 kg per person.
  • Italy: Total packaging waste reached 221.22 kg per person, 22% above the EU average. Plastic packaging waste reached 40.13 kg per person.
  • Denmark: Total packaging waste increased to 197.1 kg per person from 193.3 kg in 2023. Plastic packaging waste also rose, reaching 43.5 kg per person.

The EU picture is mixed: France reduced plastic packaging waste, while the other countries reported increases and total packaging remained a substantial waste burden.
