How to connect Monitly to VS Code (GitHub Copilot)

Monitly gives VS Code (GitHub Copilot) read-only access to official statistics (100,000+ datasets for 150+ countries from Eurostat, OECD, the World Bank, the IMF, WHO and national statistics offices). Every number comes with its source, dataset and period.

Server URL

https://monit.ly/api/mcp/public

No sign-in is needed: the server is public and read-only.

Steps

  1. Run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette, choose HTTP and paste the URL, or create .vscode/mcp.json:
    {
      "servers": {
        "monitly": {
          "type": "http",
          "url": "https://monit.ly/api/mcp/public"
        }
      }
    }
  2. Open Copilot Chat in Agent mode and enable the server's tools in the tools picker.

Try these prompts

  • What is the latest unemployment rate in Poland?
  • Compare annual inflation in Germany, France and Italy over the last five years.
  • How has GDP per capita in Spain changed since 2015?

Cost and limits

Monitly's public MCP server is free and needs no account or API key. A fair-use limit of 300 requests per user per day applies.

The tools are read-only: search_catalog, inspect_dataset, get_dataset and get_series. See the MCP documentation for parameters, or the GitHub repository.
